Father Alan joined us in the summer of 2015. He was ordained to the Transitional Diaconate in June 2011 and to the Priesthood in January, 2015. Alan’s journey to the priesthood began at an early age alongside a deep interest in and commitment to music. With us at Calvary 3/4 time, he continues his work as Lecturer in Music History and Chamber Music at Fairfield University. He also continues to concertize as time permits, both as solo pianist and in chamber ensembles, and as organist with Etherea Vocal Ensemble.

Alan’s career in the Episcopal Church began early, at age 10, when he joined the St. Thomas Choir of Men and Boys in New York City. He was a soloist with the choir, returning to the church as Organ Scholar and to the school as a member of the music faculty after receiving his BA from Yale College. From St. Thomas, he went on to St. James’ Madison Avenue, where he was Organist and Choirmaster for seven years. At St. James’, Alan began to discern a call. After an interim period in Rye NY, he began theological formation at Berkeley Divinity School at Yale, through the Yale Institute of Sacred Music. At Yale, he served as Organist and Choirmaster for Berkeley Divinity School and as Choirmaster for the Episcopal Church at Yale.

Since receiving his M Div in 2007, Alan has served as Organist and Choirmaster at Trinity Episcopal Church in Southport, CT and at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Washington, CT. While in Southport, he began teaching at Fairfield University, inaugurated The Southport Summer Music Festival (recommended by the New Yorker as “an elegant new series”) and spent two years as a part-time chaplain intern at Norwalk Hospital.

Most recently, Alan has enjoyed balancing his multiple vocational pursuits by serving as Priest Associate at Trinity Episcopal Church in Collinsville CT while serving as Musician at Church of the Advent Hope in New York City, where he helped launch the church’s new series Carnegie Hill Concerts, collaborating with members of the New York Philharmonic. He has also served as counselor and spiritual director for the Hartford-based “Heads Up! Hartford,” which links youth from urban and suburban neighborhoods in community service projects throughout the city.

The Reverend Alan C. Murchie, Assistant Rector
